Throughout my entire professional career I have worked near the Herald Square section (34th and Broadway, near MSG) of Midtown Manhattan. That was until this past February when my company moved to lower Manhattan, next to The Freedom Tower.
The weeks and months leading up to our move involved a lot of housekeeping and organizing. Throwing out old reports and files from 2008 or ones that were completely useless. It was amazing to see how much junk we all had.
I really liked our old space and area because the food options, though limited, were affordable and it was a relatively quiet area with few tourists. We were located closer to 10th Avenue than Broadway.
When I first walked into our new digs I was overwhelmed by how modern and sleek the office was. I lost my old cubicle and now sit at desk with a co-worker on each side. It is a more social environment because there are no barriers and I talk to more people than I did at the old space.
We have a geat view of the Statue of Liberty and the Hudson River. The food options are immense but also very expensive. And the bars cost a lot more too ($7 for a Bud Light). So an after work drink will cost more.
However I do love eating my lunch on the riverfront because it’s so beautiful and peaceful.
The drawbacks are expensive food, lots of tourists and a higher threat of terrorism. The positives are a modern workspace, shorter train ride, prettier part of Manhattan and the company saves $10 million a year on rent (hopefully no layoffs in the near future ).
So far I cannot complain about it and it’s part of the growing trend of not having cubicles. I will make the best of it and move forward.
Have you ever experienced a company move? Was it an improvement? How do you feel about the open floor plan?
Take care,
Mike

Personal Capital – Before Personal Capital, I had to log into 5 different financial institutions to track my account balances. My finances were scattered but that is no longer the case. Now I can just log into Personal Capital to see how everything is doing in one place. Some of you might need some organization and Personal Capital will help you with that.
MDD Hosting – I am big proponent of using MDD Hosting as my website server. Their tech support is helpful, especially if you are a newbie to website building. I could not be happier with their service and so will you.
StudioPress – I bought the Going Green theme from this site because I loved the layout and colorization. It is advertised for Environmentalist organizations but I loved it because it’s the color of money. There are many other Themes to choose from, so take a tour and see if any of them can help you with your site.
