One of my favorite podcasts is the Jalen & Jacoby Podcast. It’s hosted by Jalen Rose and Dave Jacoby of ESPN. Whenever Jalen wants to talk about a controversial subject Jacoby always warns him to “not get fired”. So thanks to their podcast for inspiring this post
Be careful what you say at all times. I had an early 20’s female co-worker make an Anti-Semetic remark in the office once and I reprimanded her for it. She meant as a joke and clearly did not mean to offend but she was oblivious to what she said and apologized to me. Luckily for her it was only the two of us in the office. I often wondered if she would have been fired if our Jewish co-workers were there. So again, be careful what you say, even if it is a joke, because someone is always listening.
I failed my sexual harassment course at BIG RETAIL every year because I felt the video they showed us was too lax on what was not sexual harassment. An example would be a man would put his hand on the woman’s tailbone and it would be considered acceptable behavior. I think physical contact should be minimized to handshakes because you never want to give off a creepy vibe
Drinking with Co-workers
Socializing with people you see every day is natural, especially when you are all young. In my early 20’s I went out all the time. Luckily nothing bad ever happened. What is considered bad? Getting into a fight, saying something inappropriate, embarrassing yourself or sexual misconduct. You should have a good time but keep the drinks to minimum because someone may tell your boss about your conduct.
Lying to your Boss
There is no reason to lie to your boss because you will get caught. If you cannot get something done on time then ask for an extension. Be honest with your work and results and do not fudge them.
I know a manager at BIG RETAIL who stole a gift card. I know a sales associate who stole customer’s credit card and bought clothes & electronics. Another sales associate bought Calvin Klein sheets that she marked down to $10. They were all fired. Moral of the story, don’t steal.
You should take a job that you know that you can get to on time. Lateness and absenteeism are the easiest ways for an employer to fire someone because there is a record. You don’t need to punch a clock for this to happen. The company knows when you log onto your computer and can connect the dots as to when you got to your desk. Be on time.
Your company follows every website that you visit. So be careful. Don’t use Facebook. Don’t use Twitter. Don’t lookup porn. This sounds simple enough. But you be surprised how many people get in trouble with this. And if you use social media on your phone, do not gossip about work. It’s definitely going to get back to the person you were talking about. And don’t talk badly about your company either for the same reason.

Personal Capital – Before Personal Capital, I had to log into 5 different financial institutions to track my account balances. My finances were scattered but that is no longer the case. Now I can just log into Personal Capital to see how everything is doing in one place. Some of you might need some organization and Personal Capital will help you with that.
MDD Hosting – I am big proponent of using MDD Hosting as my website server. Their tech support is helpful, especially if you are a newbie to website building. I could not be happier with their service and so will you.
StudioPress – I bought the Going Green theme from this site because I loved the layout and colorization. It is advertised for Environmentalist organizations but I loved it because it’s the color of money. There are many other Themes to choose from, so take a tour and see if any of them can help you with your site.
